Cultural Lecture on “Female Figures in Contemporary Chinese Cinema”

LE

On May 19, 2026, the Confucius Institute of Artois invited Professor Luisa Prudentino, who has devoted decades to the study of Chinese cinema, to deliver a cultural lecture entitled “Female Figures in Contemporary Chinese Cinema” at the Monet Lecture Hall of Artois University. The event attracted more than twenty participants from both inside and outside the university.

The lecture officially began at 5:00 p.m. During the lecture, Professor Luisa Prudentino showed how Chinese cinema has often placed strong female characters at the center of its films, portrayed by highly talented actresses. From the heroines of classical cinema to the women of contemporary films, these characters reflect the profound transformations of Chinese society.

The lecture also highlighted the fact that women in Chinese cinema go beyond the simple representation of a role: they often become social and political metaphors through which filmmakers explore the changes taking place in the country, the relationship between tradition and modernity, and the place of women in contemporary China.

The audience showed great interest in the topic, and the discussion was particularly lively, with many questions asked at the end of the lecture.

The lecture concluded successfully at 7:00 p.m. that evening.
