Ink-Blowing Painting Workshop at Jeannine Manuel International School (2026)

LE

On February 6, 2026,  Ms.Qiu Shuzhen, Chinese language teacher at the Confucius Institute in Artois, was invited to École Jeannine Manuel in northern Lille to conduct an ink-blowing painting workshop. The event lasted over two hours, with more than 60 fourth-grade students participating in the workshop.

Ms. Qiu had prepared illustrated materials featuring the ancientpoem “Plum Blossoms” and images of the Four Gentlemen (orchid in spring, bamboo in summer, chrysanthemum in autumn, plumblossom in winter). Students first recited the verses: “A few plum branches by the wall, blooming alone in the cold. From afar I know it's not snow, for a subtle fragrance drifts by,” immersing themselves in the rhythm of classical Chinese poetry. Following this, they discussed the four seasons and the “Four Gentlemen,” practicing some basic Chinese expressions. Students then followed step-by-step instructions to createtheir artwork. Upon completion, they chose either the “Nature” or “Peace” seal to stamp on their paintings. Each student ultimately finished a unique plumblossom ink-blowing painting.

With the Chinese New Year approaching, Ms. Qiu prepared panda bookmarks inscribed with the character “福” (good fortune) and taughtstudents festive greetings. The classroom echoed with lively exchanges like “A Prosperous Year of the Horse!”, “Happy Chinese New Year!”, and “Greetings for the New Year!”. The second session concluded cheerfully with the Chinese song “Happy New Year”. This experience also piqued the interest of the fourth-grade coordinator and French teacher. The French teacher participated fully in the Chinese poetry recitation and ink-blowing painting, while the Grade Coordinator observed and took photos, praising both the students' Chinese language skills and their artwork.

This workshop introduced fourth-grade students who are enrolled in the Chinese elective class to ancient Chinese poetry, ink-blowing painting, and Spring Festival-themed activities, igniting their enthusiasm for the Chinese language and culture.
