Since October 2008, the Confucius Institute of Artois has always made teacher training its primary mission. The Pedagogical Training Center for Chinese Teachers of the Confucius Institute of Artois was created in 2009. It is mainly aimed at Chinese teachers from Confucius Institutes in Europe and French-speaking African countries, including practical internships and French training for teachers of Chinese as a foreign language. The mission of the training center is to explore a new model of Chinese language teaching in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) and to carry out training in Chinese language teaching method Chinese for teachers by combining the French national formation.

Teacher training at the Confucius Institute of Artois has been held for 18 consecutive years at the frequency of once or twice a year. At the same time, an international seminar on Chinese teaching methods continues to be organized and efforts are being made to establish a European platform for the training of teachers of Confucius Institutes which integrates cutting-edge theoretical knowledge and teaching subjects education, thus offering academic exchange opportunities for Directors and Chinese teachers of Confucius Institutes in Europe, both from a cultural and intercultural point of view. This training thus brings a new reflection on the teaching of Chinese.

European Benchmarks for Chinese Language Symposium 

The CEFR is an important framework that serves as a reference for foreign language teaching in Europe. However, its influence extends far beyond the European continent, making a revolutionary and dynamic contribution to the evolution of language teaching around the world, including Asian languages and their reference frameworks and proficiency tests in Asia. 

As part of foreign language teaching in Europe, the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language also needs to be referenced to the CEFR like other languages and to establish a CEFR based benchmark for Chinese language so as to ensure an equal status with other languages within the European educational contest and opportunities for sustainable development through exchanges and cooperation with other language teaching on such a common platform. It was with this in mind that some fifteen years ago, the European Benchmarks for Chinese Language (EBCL) project was initiated. However, due to the various constraints of the time, the project was only able to cover levels A1 and A2+, without achieving its initial objective, which considerably limited its implementation. Since its inception in 2015, the European Association for Chinese Teaching (EACT) has continued to work towards the completion of this project. After years of effort, the project (Phase II) was relaunched in June 2024, with the goal of developing the subsequent B1, B2 levels and the essential framework and content for C1 by June 2026.

This symposium, organized jointly by the Text et Cultures Research Center, and the Confucius Institute at the University of Artois with the European Association for Chinese Teaching is the very first academic event specifically dedicated to the European Benchmarks for Chinese language. It also coincides with the 19th training event for European Chinese teachers organized by the Confucius Institute of Artois, which, for the last eighteen consecutive years, has been working on, with reflection, on the integration of culture in the teaching of Chinese language teaching within the framework of the CEFR. It is believed that the symposium and training event this time are of significant and historic importance for the development of teaching Chinese as a foreign language in Europe and internationally.

This symposium aims to invite and bring together teacher-researchers of Chinese in Europe who have a keen interest in EBCL and with substantial experience in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language to contribute to the further development of the EBCL project. While the project is mainly based upon CEFR (2020 Companion), it also takes into consideration the reference frameworks such as Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education, and will thus also invite colleagues from the relevant institutions and projects such as American and British proficiency standards for Chinese as a foreign language to participate in this special academic symposium, with the aim to continuously improve the work of this phase of the EBCL project and its application in Europe through such exchanges with a better understanding of the convergences and divergences between different proficiency frameworks concerning the Chinese as a foreign language.
